History Mass Update for Tracking Campaigns

I'm trying to have Sugar create a History record, or something similar, to keep track of every marketing piece each contact has received. This seems like pretty basic CRM stuff, hopefully someone can help out. I'll give you a couple of scenarios:

1 - We don't use Sugar for sending emails, but we do build the lists and export them from Sugar to our email tool. Once the email is sent, how can I track that all those contacts have been sent that particular email?

2 - We send a group of contacts a direct mail piece. How is that tracked in Sugar? I can't go and update the history of 2000 contacts manually, isn't there a way to have the campaign module create some history for anything other than email campaigns sent through Sugar?

Oh, we're using the Professional Edition.

Define your campaign(s) as usual but without anything (no tracker urls etc). Define a target list with your snail mail /print targets. Add the target list to your campaign. Press "mark as sent" (top of the campaign screen) and you are done.

Now what about email campaigns that don't go through Sugar? Would that require a new choice in the drop down menu so that it says email but acts like a direct mail campaign?

Doesn't make a difference really because you just see the name of the campaign at the person with the text "sent or attempted". You may add some comments in the campaign's description fields.
You can of course add a campaign type as well but be careful not to touch the existing ones - some have a function attached.
