Adding New Field

Dear Fellow CRM Users,
I am trying to insert a new field under the leads tab. I have formatted the name of the field and it is set up as a dropdown. However, when I move it into the space I want it to go it only lists the name of the field and nothing else. It does not show it as a dropdown. I noticed all of the other fields have boxes around them, but I can't figure out how to make a box in the space I have allotted for this field. Any help you can provide would be great!
