A customer self-service portal provides an interface for the clients of a business to interact with that business via a web site. It is seen as a positive thng by many clients, as they do not have to wait on the phone for support staff, and it is impersonal, functional, and available 24/7. Typical functions of a customer portal include:

    - filing service cases (trouble tickets) and/or software bugs
    - checking at a later time for updates to service cases filed
    - updating your own profile info within the CRM of your supplier
    - accessing customer forums
    - collaborating on projects
    - accessing FAQ information
    - etc...

There are two options for a portal in Sugar - one is an old Mambo project. Some users have updated it to offer some functionality in the Joomla portal - a fork of Mambo. This option is for the Open Source SugarCRM version. For Pro and Enterprise versions, Sugar offers SugarPortal, available I understand at an extra cost, and only for clients of those systems.
