SQL based report generation

Reports are the most limited tool I have seen in a long while.
We cannot even build a report in multiple currencies with currency as a group by and/or filter.

Very limiting, very frustrating.

I think we need to have the report generating tool allow SQL savvy developers to just write the query instead of jumping through the interface hoops to create a report. It takes me minutes to develop a SQL query, hours to get the equivalent to work the way I want in a SugarCRM Report.

For while what I use to help, is after generate a report from reports module, copy the generated sql, and execute that directly on database server, performing the desired changes. Then I can expot its results to excel, or maybe write an web interface to display that.

What you could try to do (while this feature request is not supported), is to extend the reports module to allow you to inject your on sql select statment, I think it is possible, and maybe not so complex to do.
