Fetch data from external database to sugarcrm custom module

Hai Friends,
I am new to the world of SugarCRM. In our company already we a database which contains all customer name and others details. Now i'm creating a custom module for marketing persons to enter their daily activities. In that he has to select the customer name from the database.
Is there any option to relate the customer name field to external database?

If it were me, I would just export a .csv from your source database and use Sugar's import feature to create your clients.
