how to create mashup with external apps?

Using SugarCRM community edition version 6.3
Is there any way to integrate a third party web application into SugarCRM interface? I would like to display user specific information from an external server into a new tab where I could use javascripting and HTML tags for information presentment. I looked at dashlets and it has couple of limitations:
1. I can only use URLs - if there was a way to use a <div> tag and fill it with javascript/html it would be great.
2. There is no control of width of the dashlet

I am a sugarcrm newbie, would appreciate if you can point me in the right direction.

Dashets:

you can create your own dashlets and have completely custom html loaded in dashlet window

On record pages:

i guess your best best would be to use footerTpl and to generate and populate initial data through the view function and have js that will query for updates through ajax if needed.

Thanks for your prompt reply. Can you share with me some links/docs/tutorial on how go about implementing your recommendation.
Also if there any any other way of integration, I would love to hear about it.
