    Hi, John,

Are those books useful for developing in current version of Sugar (6.2.x, 6.3.x) ?

    Thanks,

    David

Yes, both should be great for developing on recent version of Sugar.

Just my two cents: Krumo is a PHP library that let's you pretty display PHP objects on a web page. It is incredibly handy and in my opinion most PHP developers would benefit to include it in their dev arsenal.

I posted about it at stack_overflow

I found neither book much help at all! Main problem was you could only follow the tutorials if you had the pro version of Sugar which is ridiculous since most beginners to sugar are going to come through the Community edition first. What is needed is a complete walk through of how to build a custom module from scratch that will assume you no nothing about sugar but you can simply code and will work on both the pro and community editions. I have come from a MVC php background but sugar is very different to what I am used to, being so meta driven was extremely confusing at first and I found it ridiculously hard to get into developing on the platform. The type of books and tutorials that are available for other large open source web applications just doesnít seem to exist for this and what books are available are crap, assume you know a lot and require the pro version. I would go as far as to say that this is deliberate so that too many developers donít get into heavily customising the Community edition and taking away business from the pro.

On the subject of documentation: I've found the API documentation hard to use, not least because all of the examples use PHP for the client code, and there are no examples of what the actual request param payloads should look like. For example, there is a 'REST' API which accepts JSON for the rest_data request param; the API can also return JSON. Yet there is not one single example of a typical JSON payload or response in any of the docs I've seen. The whole point of an API is that it is language-independent. A Python dev should find the API docs as easy to use as a PHP dev. JSON is such a nice model to use for communicating with an API, so please could you use it in the documentation!

Link to SugarCRM source code from Sugar Documentation page. (When code is more useful for learning than documentation made for just for that ...)
All things in text files. (Deployments by git commit are norm nowadays...)
Extensive documentation on extending SugarCRM CE. (That one is biggest advantage of SugarCRM, so why not brag about it? - Dev blog is either under-Google-crawled or under-SEO'ed)

And all things in text files.
And more things possible in custom/.
